For Cars Fans: LEGO Speed Champions Lightning McQueen (77255)
Ka-Chow, in Bricks
LEGO made this one for the 20th anniversary of Cars. It has the lightning bolt, the number 95, the Rust-Eze logo and tires printed with Lightyear.
It’s also the only Speed Champions car with a detailed undercarriage. Reviewers call it one of their favorite sets and say the instructions are easy to follow.
Smaller Than the Box Suggests
At 270 pieces, the finished car fits in a hand. A few reviewers expected it to be bigger.
Radiator Springs Regulars
A kid who’s watched Cars more times than you can count and still cheers at the last race.
The Biggest Build: LEGO NINJAGO The Dragon of Life (71859)
One Dragon, Eight Minifigures
The Dragon of Life from season 4 of Dragons Rising has a saddle for a minifigure. Its jaw, neck, legs, claws and tail all pose, and its wings spread or tuck.
Zane, Sora, Arin and dragon form Lloyd and Cole face off against the Acid Monster, the Earth Monster and the Loyalist Leader. The Earth Monster gets a posable mini mech, and a spinning plant hides a golden sword.
Room for the Wings
With the wings out, it’s over 21 inches wide. Clear a big shelf or the top of a dresser.
Dragons Rising Fans
A kid who wants a weekend build and a whole season of battles to act out after.
LEGO Creator 3 in 1 Retro Gaming Console (31380), Three Gadgets in One Box
Press Start
They build a handheld console with buttons and joysticks that move, plus three game cartridges to slot in. Then they can rebuild it into a desktop computer with a keyboard and mouse, or a retro arcade machine.
Reviewers say it looks even better in person and like that it builds more than one way.
Pocket Sized
The console is about 3 inches high and 5 inches wide. At 268 pieces, it’s a short build.
Gamers Who Like Old School
A kid who’s curious about what video games looked like when you were young.
For Ocean Lovers: LEGO Creator 3 in 1 Fierce Shark with a Treasure Chest (31381)
Jaws, Fins and Buried Treasure
The shark’s mouth, body, fins and tail all move, and it guards a treasure chest, a crab and a clam shell. Rebuild it into an anglerfish or a manta ray.
Each creature sits on its own display stand. Reviewers say it’s challenging enough to keep kids interested.
Three Builds, One Shelf Spot
Only one sea creature can stand at a time. To make the manta ray, the shark comes apart first.
Shark Superfans
A kid who knows every kind of shark and wants one swimming on the bookshelf.
LEGO Marvel Epic Battle: Hulkbuster vs. The Hulk (76343)
Suit Up Against the Hulk
Iron Man climbs inside the Hulkbuster armor, and its arms, legs and body all pose. The Hulk fights back by grabbing a traffic light to swing.
The scene comes from Avengers: Age of Ultron, with debris and steel beams that collapse. Display it on the base with its nameplate, or pull the figures off to play.
Two Fighters Only
Iron Man and the Hulk are the only minifigures. It’s one big battle rather than a whole team.
Iron Man Loyalists
A Marvel fan who’d pick the armor over the muscles every time.
For Stitch Fans: LEGO Disney Angel from Lilo & Stitch (43257)
Ears Up, Antennae Out
Angel, Stitch’s pink friend, stands over 10 inches tall when she’s done. Her head turns, and her ears and antennae pose.
Top her head with a butterfly or three pastel “floating” hearts. Reviewers say she looks great next to other LEGO Stitch sets.
A Desk Buddy, Not a Playset
Angel is made to sit on a shelf or desk. Kids who want vehicles and action may finish and move on.
Ohana Fans
A Lilo and Stitch fan whose room already has a little blue alien somewhere.
The Cutest Desk Decor: LEGO Botanicals Rocking Plants (11506)
Plants With Arms, Legs and Smiles
Lumi has purple buds and Ellie has coral buds. Each one sits in a pastel pot with a smiley face, little arms and legs.
The pots have round bottoms, so the green one rocks back and forth and the pink one rocks side to side. Kids can swap the plants between pots.
Done in One Sitting
At 253 pieces, it’s the shortest build on the list. Plan it as a fun hour, not a weekend project.
Room Decorators
A kid who loves cute things and wants a plant that never needs watering.
LEGO Creator 3 in 1 Unicorn Castle (31175), for Kids Who Love Rainbows
Towers, Turrets and a Rainbow Staircase
The castle has four towers, two turrets, a fountain, a diamond room and a telescope. A white unicorn, two Pegasus figures and a bird live inside.
Rebuild it into a unicorn ship with a rainbow sail, or a forest cabin with a picnic table. One reviewer said their kids couldn’t stop building, taking it apart and building again.
Animal Figures, No Minifigures
The set includes a unicorn, two Pegasus figures and a bird, but no human minifigures. Kids who want characters exploring the castle can add their own.
Unicorn Dreamers
A kid who draws rainbows on everything and wants a castle that changes every week.
LEGO Sets for 9 Year Olds: What Parents Ask Us
Which set gives them the longest build?
The Dragon of Life, at 1,050 pieces. It’s almost four times bigger than the Retro Gaming Console or Rocking Plants.
What does 3 in 1 mean on a LEGO Creator box?
The same bricks build three different models, one at a time. The Retro Gaming Console, Fierce Shark and Unicorn Castle all work this way, so one box gives them three builds.
Which ones are best for playing, not just displaying?
The Dragon of Life and the Unicorn Castle have the most to play with. Lightning McQueen, Angel and Rocking Plants are built more for the shelf.
Do any need batteries?
No. Every set here works with bricks alone.
