Board Games for 3 Year Olds: 8 Easy First Games

Good board games for 3 year olds are over before anyone gets wiggly. At three, kids can take turns and match colors, but long rules and long waits lose them fast.

Every game below is rated for age 3 or younger by its maker. None need reading or batteries. A few let everyone win together, and the rest bring just enough suspense to keep a preschooler at the table.

Quick answer: For a kid who hates losing, HABA First Orchard puts everyone on the same team. For a Bluey fan, Candy Land Bluey Edition lets them race as Bluey or Bingo. For giggles, Don’t Break the Ice is all suspense.

HABA First Orchard, Where Everyone Wins Together

HABA My Very First Games First Orchard cooperative game with wooden fruit, raven and basket

Pick the Fruit Before the Raven Lands

Four trees hold chunky wooden apples, pears and plums. Roll the color die and pick a fruit of that color into the basket. Roll the raven, and he hops one step down the path.

If the basket fills before the raven reaches the orchard, everybody wins. A round takes about 10 minutes.

Made for the Youngest Players

HABA rates it for ages 2 and up, so the rules are as simple as they get. A 3 year old who already loves games may want something harder by four.

Little Team Players

A kid who would rather beat the raven together than beat their big sister.

The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game

The Sneaky Snacky Squirrel Game with tree board, squirrel squeezer and colored acorns

Squeeze, Grab, Fill the Log

Spin the spinner, then use the squirrel squeezer to pick up an acorn of that color and drop it in your log. The first player with all five colors wins.

The box opens up into the tree board, so setup is quick.

Some Spins Take Acorns Away

A few spins let a player steal an acorn or lose one. That can sting for a kid who’s still learning how to lose.

Little Grabbers

A kid who loves tongs, tweezers and anything they can squeeze.

Candy Land: Bluey Edition

Candy Land Bluey Edition board game with Bluey character movers

Race to Bluey’s House

Kids play as Bluey, Bingo, Mum, Dad, Muffin or Socks and draw color cards to move down the road. The board passes spots from the show, like Rug Island and the Shadowlands.

A Dance Mode card gets everyone up and dancing. Land on the Magic Xylophone space and you get to freeze another player.

Cardboard Movers

The characters are cardboard on plastic stands. A few reviewers wish the pieces were sturdier.

Kids Who Quote Bluey

A kid who knows every episode and has played Keepy Uppy in the living room.

Don’t Break the Ice: Who Drops Phillip?

Hasbro Don't Break the Ice game with ice tray, mallets and Phillip the Penguin

Tap, Tap, Don’t Drop Phillip

Fill the tray with ice blocks and stand Phillip the Penguin on top. Players take turns tapping out one block with a little mallet.

Whoever makes Phillip fall through loses, so every tap gets a little more nervous.

Setup Takes a Minute

Pressing all 32 blocks into the tray takes patience. Some reviewers say the ice caves in early if it isn’t packed tight.

Edge of Their Seat Kids

A kid who squeals every time the ice wobbles.

Cootie, the Build a Bug Game

Hasbro Cootie bug building game with bug bodies, legs and spinner

Spin for Legs, Eyes and a Mouth

Each player starts with a bug body and head. Spin to collect parts like legs, eyes and a mouth, and the first to finish a whole bug wins.

Kids can mix and match pieces to make the silliest bug at the table. The guide has two extra ways to play.

Legs Can Pop Out

Some reviewers say the pieces don’t stay snapped in very well.

Silly Bug Builders

A kid who names every bug they find in the backyard.

A Game for You and Them: Peaceable Kingdom Monkey Around

Peaceable Kingdom Monkey Around movement game with plush banana and cards

Hop, March, Balance a Banana

Draw a card and do it together, like hopping, marching or balancing the plush banana on your head. Some cards end with a hug or a high five.

There are 40 movement cards, and nobody wins or loses. A parent guide comes in the box.

Made for One Kid and One Grown Up

It’s a two player game for a child and an adult. It doesn’t work as a game for a group of kids.

Wiggle Worms

A kid who can’t sit at a table for more than a minute.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Let’s Feed Game

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Let's Feed preschool board game with caterpillar movers

Munch the Fruit, Build a Butterfly

Each player moves a sculpted caterpillar around the board to eat fruit. Every stop earns a butterfly puzzle piece.

The first to finish a five piece butterfly wins. There are 58 movement cards to steer the caterpillars.

Learn the Special Cards First

A few cards help players or slow them down. A practice round helps your 3 year old learn what each one does.

Story Time Regulars

A kid who asks for The Very Hungry Caterpillar every single night.

School Zone Memory Match Farm

School Zone Memory Match Farm card game with farm animal picture cards

Find the Pig, Find Its Twin

The deck has 27 pairs of farm animals and farm things. Lay them face down, flip two at a time and keep every match.

The cards are big with rounded corners, and they come in a carrying case. Start with fewer pairs and add more as your little one gets better.

Cards, Not a Board

It’s a deck of 54 cards, so you’ll need a table or a patch of floor to spread them out.

Barnyard Buddies

A kid who moos at every cow on a car ride.
